Botox and Medical Treatment of Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is an uncomfortable and embarrassing condition caused by overactive sweat glands which cause excessive wetness. Most people, who do not suffer from the disorder, find those who have the condition distasteful and uncomfortable to be around. Hyperhidrosis can only be treated with Botox by a licensed dermatologist who has had botox training and will perform tests on the patients to determine if they are a candidate for Botox treatments. Patients who are considering Botox as a treatment for their hyperhidrosis should consult with a dermatologist and ask specific questions about the effectiveness of the treatment and request documentation regarding how well other patients have responded to the treatment.

Once a patient with hyperhidrosis is scheduled for a treatment with Botox injections, they should discontinue the use of over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen as these may interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment. Botox treatments for this particular condition are administered directly into the areas in which the patient is experiencing the excessive sweating. The dermatologist will generally use a topical anesthetic in order to numb the skin prior to the injection. Even with the topical anesthetic, the patient will tend to feel a momentary stinging sensation after the injection is given. Most patients will feel full relief from their condition within five to seven of receiving the Botox treatments, although some patients have reported some relief within the first day or two. If the condition is not completely relieved by the first injections, the procedure may need to be repeated in three to four months for the patient to see full results.
