Food that only tastes great when your drunk!

It’s the end of a long session and you are very worse for wear as you make your way to the taxi rank, but it doesn’t seem to be getting any closer due to the fact you are zig-zagging across the pavement and not really making much progress. Suddenly you spot a bright light and stagger towards it, the pizza/kebab/burger van.

Now in ordinary circumstances you wouldn’t go within a mile of these little shacks operated by someone wearing an apron of an indeterminable colour, but after a few too many they seem heaven sent. Obviously you buy enough to feed 3 people as the munchies are kicking in big style, and you eat half before you get into your taxi and half when you get home. I say eat, in reality, most will have been dropped, but there will still be enough to both satisfy your hunger and to be attached to your hair when you wake up.

Now I know all food looks grotty in the morning when it’s cold and greasy, but the stuff from these is absolutely rank, and your mouth tastes as if you have gargled with burnt onion mouthwash. The sad fact is that after a good drinking session, we don’t give a stuff what we eat. Anything will do; and these places pray on the fact that you are too far gone to realise how bad their fare actually is. Now not all burger vans are like this, and there are some very good ones, but the ones hanging around at 4am are generally not that great. Even after vigorous cleaning with industrial strength toothpaste and our ultra powerful electric toothbrush, the greasy coating in still there, and the sad fact is we’ll do exactly the same next time!

Costs of Dentures

What will my dentures cost?

There is no set fee for dentures. Because the time required to meet each patient’s needs differs so does the fee. It is recommended that you have a full examination of your mouth and also any existing dentures you may have so so the dentist is able to make a better more educated decision about any future treatments and to get an idea of the estimated cost.

The estimated fee is also dependent on the amount of chair side time and laboratory time necessary to achieve the appropriate end result. First there is the fee which includes consultation and examination of £ 65. You can expect that the estimated fee will be between £ 900 – £ 1100 (This was for complete upper and lower dentures.) Single dentures cost about 2/3’s of the total fee compared to complete dentures which are the most expensive. Once you’ve selected the treatment of your choice you’ll be asked to pay 1/3 of your fee upon beginning treatment, to cover material denture costs. The remainder of the balance to be paid at the final office visit.

If you are using a private dentist, their fees can vary widely. Just because a private dentist’s price is higher than another dentist does not mean you are being overcharged. You might well be getting very high quality dental work.

I want the perfect smile

Orthodontics is an area of dentistry which is concerned with the positioning and alignment of the teeth.  Orthodontic treatments are very common, especially amongst teenagers. Orthodontic treatments help to improve the alignment and positioning of the teeth, making them look straighter, healthier and much more attractive. Many people suffer from crooked and twisted teeth, gaps between their teeth and missing teeth; orthodontic treatment can help to straighten teeth and improve the overall look and functioning of the teeth.

Why is orthodontic treatment necessary?

In most cases, orthodontic problems are caused by a problem with a patient’s bite; this is the way their upper and lower teeth fit together when the jaws are closed in a relaxed position. Patients may have an over bite, an under bite or a cross bite; problems with the bite may cause the teeth to gradually move out of position and may also contribute to difficulties with speaking and eating. Many people who have crooked teeth or gaps between their teeth feel very self-conscious about the way their teeth look when they smile; this can affect how they behave around other people and in a school or professional environment.

Which treatments are available?

Most people with orthodontic problems are treated using a brace; there are many different types of brace available nowadays and you should discuss which type of brace is best for you with your dentist. Dentists in essex offer a wide range of treatments, ranging from traditional fixed braces to Invisalign invisible braces and Damon braces. Once braces have been removed, patients are advised to wear a retainer to keep their teeth in place.

Do braces hurt?

Initially, it takes time to get used to wearing a brace and it may feel uncomfortable at first. Today, there are many different types of brace and some are much more comfortable than others; ask your dentist about the different types of braces available to you.

How long will I have to wear braces?

Treatment time varies considerably according to which treatment you have and the state of your teeth before treatment as well as the guidance of your dentist; most people wear braces for between 12 and 24 months but there are some treatments available that can produce results in as little as 16 weeks.

Dental implants; are they better than a bridge or dentures?

Posted on April 1st, 2010 by  |  Comments Off

When dental implants were first researched in the 1950s in the U.K. no one realised what an innovation they would become. In Sweden in 1965 the first operation was successfully carried out. The research revealed a natural process called Osseointergration, this occurs when bone and a foreign material are put together. It involves the bone forming naturally around the implants and becoming part of it, this allows the implant to become as natural to the mouth as a tooth’s root would be. First of all though the dentist needs to carry out some tests, these involve digital photos and x-rays, measurements and colour coding. The patient needs to have a wide strong jaw bone to take the implant, so the tests are vital. If the tests come back O.K. and in most cases they do, then the surgeon will call you back and start the treatment. They will start by cutting into the gum line in the gap, then sliding the implant under the gum; they will screw it down using self tappers or drill holes to allow them to glue an implant that has cylinders attached. The gum line is stitched up and the whole area is left for the Osseointergration to complete, this can take from three to six months to complete, and at the end of the process the implant will be part of the jaw bone. The next stage is to attach the studs that will hold the artificial teeth in place, this is called an abutment and is also made of titanium to keep infection away. In the meantime an orthodontist will be busy making the tooth or teeth that will sit on the abutment. More that one can be placed on the same implant. The artificial teeth are made from a ceramic material that is very hard wear, and can be brushed and flossed just like a real tooth. They take a few weeks to adjust to and get your mode of chewing food with, but they will last you a lifetime. They can also be replaced when they suffer from wear and tear or become accidentally damaged, chipped or cracked. Your dentist will clean them at your six monthly visits as they will clean your natural teeth from tartar and bacteria build up. It is expensive in the short term, but remember that an implant needs no special looking after and you can simply forget that it is an artificial tooth.

Gastric Bands and Psychology

Posted on March 30th, 2010 by  |  Comments Off

The use of gastric bands has been in motion for well over 40 years, but only in studies today are psychologists finding reason to believe that the BMI or body mass index is not the only thing that needs to be monitored by those that are looking into this extreme weight loss surgery. A gastric lap band is a silicone inflatable band that wraps around the top most portion of the stomach to regulate the amount of food intake that person has. This allows the body to digest less food at once. For a long time, the only qualification that people had to have was a certain body mass index number; but with recent studies, scientist have found that there might be some other things to look into when determining if and when a person should be able to get a gastric band.

Psychologists have determined that some people might try and get the gastric band simply for weight loss rather than medical necessity. However, this was always a possibility since this obesity surgery has been prevalent. Another possibility is a person with destructive tendencies may get the band so that he or she does not have to regulate what they eat and go on frequent binges for one reason or another. This worries doctors because this type of behavior can cause rips in the gastric band or other complications that can result in life threatening situations. For this reason, many clinics and hospitals around the world have begun monitoring the mental state of being for individuals that are looking to go through this weight loss surgery to make sure that they genuinely want to lose the weight that they say they do. It is for this reason that psychology is becoming a sub-class of this type of weight loss surgery all over the world.
