Football
Football is the UK’s national and most popular sport and
has a huge following across the nation. A huge amount of money is
invested into football clubs every year and the game is big business,
with clubs offering outrageous sums of money for players and television
channels desperately trying to outbid each other for the rights to
televise the most popular matches. There is occasional controversy over
how much clubs pay their players, particularly if a player is involved
in a scandal in the press. Clubs play in a league system with the
Premier league being the most prestigious; the premiership is also
where the money is to be found with the price of season tickets
reaching nearly one thousand pounds for some clubs, although this does
not deter many hardcore fans who will attend every match their
favourite team plays in the season. Money is also made through a
variety of merchandising, team shirts, scarves and various other
branded items of official merchandise are sold at a high profit.
Football is also enjoyed by many people other than the
spectators who attend matches or watch televised games from home, there
are many amateur leagues all over the country which sees players who
just enjoy the game in their free time competing in friendly matches.
